Day 2: The Iron Ore Train
Depart early from Atar toward the northern desert plains to reach the small outpost where you will join the legendary Mauritania Railway.
The "Train du Désert" is over 2 kilometers long and carries iron ore from the mines of Zouérat to the Atlantic coast. You can choose to ride in the passenger carriage or, for the more adventurous, sit on top of the iron ore in the open-top wagons. The journey provides an unparalleled perspective of the vast, silent Sahara under the stars.
Day 1 – The Road to the Adrar Plateau
Your journey begins in Nouakchott, heading northeast into the Sahara. Witness the transition from coastal plains to the rugged, ancient landscapes of the Adrar region.
Stop in the Tirjit Oasis, featuring palm-shaded natural pools where you can relax and towering red sandstone cliffs. Continue to Atar, the gateway city to the Adrar Plateau. Explore the local market, known for its dates and traditional Saharan handicrafts.
